Luddite Joins the Internet Revolution Print

Those of you who know me know that while I have embraced some technology (I depend heavily on email…), I have been a Luddite when it comes to social networking on the computer.  For those of you like me, who have heard the term and thought that was a biblical tribe during the time of King David... the Luddites were the old fashioned British weavers who destroyed looms during industrial revolution.  Like the Luddites, I too do not like “change.”  That being said, I am proud to say that this is my first blog.

There have been a bunch of slogans out there lately all geared toward encouraging local shopping.  The Salisbury Post has their “$20 on the 20th” campaign.  There is a 3/50 Project that encourages consumers to pick 3 businesses and spend $50 a month with them.  My friend Connie in Hickory said they decided to do the 4/40 program because the math was easier (that one makes me think of an interstate bypass for some reason).  There is the Indie program supporting independent bookstores.  All these programs are good.

However, I would like to start one more. It’s the “name your own shop local/independent/ downtown” campaign.  I’m not picky. If you get paid on the 15th and 30th of the month and want to call it “Bob’s 10/15/10/30 Downtown Campaign,” that is fine with me.  In fact, I would like to see what you name yours if you care to join me on this blog.

Downtown Salisbury is a big part of what makes Salisbury special, and our great retailers are what make the Downtown special.  When you support them, YOU are the one making downtown special.  Thanks for helping us make it happen!

Way to go Randy!! I'm also in that "trying to embrace" state! You have been an inspiration!

How about a special for all Luddites? Downtown Luddite day. Except it would be hard to spread the word without Facebook.

I am going to need to see some evidence of technology having been "embraced". Tolerated, perhaps. Embraced? Yeah, not so much.

Randy, as one Luddite to another, may I say you have shown yourself quite capable to be'chameleonic' [is that a word? Let's declare that it is one, if it means 'able to change' :)] in your First Ever Blog Post. Looking forward to more of what you [and others?] have to say. We *are* highly blessed to live in Rowan County, with Salisbury as our thriving 'hub' and so many suburbs that contribute variety and richness to all our lives. We're thankful to all who work so hard and, through great and ongoing philanthropic gestures, have made this such an excellent place to 'spend a life'.
