Announcing the 2021 Main Street America Designated Communities and 2020 Reinvestment Statistics

We are proud to announce that 883 Main Street programs across the country have earned Accredited status, Main Street America’s top level of recognition. This elite designation signifies a strong commitment to preservation-based economic development and community revitalization, along with a track record of effectively applying the Main Street Approach™. We also applaud the 337 programs that have been designated as Main Street America Affiliates this year. These programs have created meaningful improvements in their communities and are on the pathway to achieving even more significant economic, physical, and organizational improvements in their downtowns.

Combined, these Accredited and Affiliate communities generated $4.14 billion in local reinvestment, helped open 4,356 net new businesses, generated 14,988 net new jobs, catalyzed the rehabilitation of 8,488 historic buildings, and clocked 983,702 volunteer hours in 2020. Learn more and celebrate the incredible work of the Main Street movement in this week’s Main Spotlight.

COVID-19, City Operations and Event Update

As you know, the COVID-19 virus (Coronavirus) is a rising concern and has been declared a pandemic. This topic was discussed during the NC Main Street Conference this week as this unfortunate news broke. Downtown Salisbury, Inc. staff have spoken to other business owners and Main Street managers across the State and would like to share some of the strategies below that encourage healthy customers to shop in-store and on-line with their local small business owning friends and neighbors during this difficult period.

What You Need to Know About Coronavirus

  • This is an emerging, rapidly evolving situation and the City and Downtown Salisbury, Inc. will continue to monitor and provide updated information to as it becomes available.
  • While COVID-19 is a serious public health threat, the current immediate health risk to the general public in North Carolina is considered low at this time.
  • COVID-19 is most often spread through the air by coughing or sneezing, through close personal contact (including shaking hands) or through touching your nose, mouth or eyes before washing your hands.

Business Owners: Tips for Increasing Sales

  • Continue promoting the value of supporting locally owned businesses.
  • Encourage customers to buy gift cards for use at a later date.

What We Are Doing and Recommend to Protect Valued Employees and Customers

  • We are following CDC guidelines regarding environmental cleaning and are also increasing the frequency of cleaning city-operated buildings. We will also continue to check bathrooms to ensure handwashing supplies are stocked and available.
  • Posters and other educational materials have been posted and made available
  • Meetings with large number of employees are strongly discouraged.
  • The City is encouraging meetings and events be kept to a minimum and video conferencing or call-in networking utilized instead. The City will adhere to the concept of “social distancing” where a minimum of 60” distance between people is advised.

At this time, City operations will continue as normal, with the exception of City Council meetings. City Council meetings will still be open to the public; however, the City is asking that only employees who have presentations to City Council attend. The Council meeting can be watched at home on Access16 or online at salisburync.gov/webcast.

  • If a community spread of COVID-19 happens in Salisbury, it is important to have a plan in place for yourself, your family, your staff and business. Things to consider when making your plan:
